How Geothermal Energy and Heating Works

Boreholes for Ground Source Heating

OPEN LOOP SYSTEM
A borehole is drilled until an adequate supply of water is found.
This system is dependant on a suitable water supply being available under your property.

HeatingWorks CLOSED LOOPED VERTICAL SYSTEM
This system incorporates one or more boreholes which are drilled at between 150m to 500m deep.
There is then a vertical pipe installed in the boreholes.
The finished borehole is then back-filled or sealed with special heat-conductive grout from top to bottom.
This system is ideal where the site is smaller, as often a single borehole perhaps with another one located a few meters away if a greater demand is required would suffice.

HORIZONTAL LOOP SYSTEM
The Horizontal loop systems work on the same principle as the Vertical loop a pipe is coiled and placed in trenches over a wide area.Soil conditions must be suitable for this to work well and require 1 to 2m trenches of several hundred feet.
